Relaxation massage and deep tissue massage are two different techniques used in the field of massage therapy. While both types of massage aim to provide therapeutic benefits, they differ in their approaches and target different aspects of the body. Relaxation massage is the massage type that is offered at the salon, it offers both relaxing and rejuvenating health benefits. We also offer hot stones massage, which is a form of relaxation massage that adds heat and unique massage techniques/contact by using heated stones.

Relaxation Massage:

Relaxation massage, also known as Swedish massage, is primarily focused on promoting relaxation and overall well-being. It involves gentle, flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements applied with light to moderate pressure. The main goal of relaxation massage is to relieve muscle tension, reduce stress, improve circulation, and induce a state of relaxation and calmness. It is often performed in a soothing environment with soft music.

Deep Tissue Massage:

Deep tissue massage, on the other hand, is a more intense and therapeutic form of massage. It targets the deeper layers of muscles, tendons, and fascia to address chronic muscle tension, adhesions, and knots. The massage therapist applies slower and more focused pressure using their hands, fingers, elbows, and sometimes even tools. Deep tissue massage aims to break up scar tissue, release muscle tension, improve mobility, and alleviate chronic pain. It can be somewhat uncomfortable during the session, but it should not be overly painful. It is important to communicate with the therapist regarding your comfort levels to ensure the pressure is appropriate. Our relaxation massage offers elements of deeper tissue massage especially if a higher pressure massage is desired.

Key Differences:

Pressure: Relaxation massage uses light to moderate pressure, while deep tissue massage involves deeper and more intense pressure and is often used to help with deep tension and some injury rehabilitation.

Focus: Relaxation massage primarily targets relaxation and stress relief, while deep tissue massage focuses on addressing specific musculoskeletal issues, chronic pain, and tension.

Technique: Relaxation massage uses gentle, flowing strokes, whereas deep tissue massage employs slower, targeted techniques to penetrate deeper layers of muscle tissue.

Sensations: Relaxation massage is generally soothing and pleasant, promoting a sense of tranquillity. Deep tissue massage may involve some discomfort or mild pain as it works on releasing tension and knots.

Purpose: Relaxation massage is often sought for general relaxation, stress reduction, and overall wellness. Deep tissue massage is more commonly sought by individuals with chronic pain, injuries, or specific muscular issues.

It's important to note that these descriptions provide a general overview, and individual massage therapists may vary in their techniques and approach. It's always beneficial to communicate your specific needs and preferences with your massage therapist to ensure they tailor the session to your current requirements or preferences.

Although you may favour one type of massage over the other on various occasions one may be more suited to you at a given particular time or maybe you just fancy a change, to make sure you receive a massage that you are hoping for its always best to communicate this to the therapist before they start. Now relax, book that massage and enjoy some well deserved you time. To see our massage treatments click the link below.
